During a recession, many businesses try to cut back on as much as possible, but when does cutting back start to hurt the company? I am re-vamping and marketing a website for a small industrial fastener company and have run into the same question. After much internal debate, and a ton of research, we have decided to go after the "secondary" niche-words.
My reasoning is this: If you primarily use the most searched for words, you are going to be up against the big guys in your industry. These guys get clicks, traffic and as such, search ratings, in a large part from name/brand recognition, and from the fact that human nature will naturally lead people to the bigger companies. I know we can't compete at that level, and by using those keywords, I would be attempting to de-throne the kings.
Also, if paying for ads on search engines, again, if you use the most popular terms, the big guys will have the ad prices way up and it would cost a small fortune to even get listed at #10 or #11, so why try. Again, go after the niche words.
But my third reason is, research has shown that when using a search engine your searches become much more specific when you are actually getting ready to buy. The research also shows that when researching, only general terms are used. Hence, database management software, might be used for research, and client management database would be used when you know what to buy.
For these 3 reasons, we are going with the niche words.

Unfortunately, you have chosen a business that is tremendously crowded online. It will be very hard to rank for any related terms that will send you actual visitors. I recommend that you not pay for SEO for that site. Instead, pay for promoting your site through blogs instead.

I have been doing SEO for over 10 years and selling you SEO services for what appears to be a Yahoo store is unethical, in my opinion. This company should know better and seems to be more interested in taking your money than actually helping with your business.
I may be wrong about the company you have contacted, but Yahoo stores are very hard to rank and are generally not the best choice for online businesses that hope to receive natural search traffic to a business website. They should have told you that up front, before they provided you a quote.

Really depends on what you are trying to do. Do you know the niche you are in. What keywords are most relevant to your market. The basics first then you could go into software. I use 6 different suites for tracking promotion and landing page variant testing you name it. Have a game plan and go from there.

SEM or SEO? SEM is Pay per Click (e.g. Google Adwords) and SEO is to improve on your organic (free) ranking in Search Engines.
I recommend to check the SEO and/or SEM Buyers Guide from MarketingSherpa (if you are a US advertiser). They are not cheap but worth the investment (I own them myself).

SEO is a scientific game these days. My advice to you is read a couple of good articles on SEO from a trusted source. Form a belief system of your own. Then find a company you are comfortable will execute and critique your plan.
Otherwise you may buy a bottle of snake oil.
Your titles are too confusing. Make it idiot proof…. tell them what you do in your name.
You don't want to make it difficult for people to figure out what you do.
Add solutions to the end of your name or come up with something proprietary like "The King Of SEO" If you are targeting local biz try putting your towns name in your title to dominate local search engines.
Do your keyword research, what are people searching for? Build your name around the top searches.
